In order to cultivate students’ creative thinking and provide them with a chance to apply English to practice, Student Affairs Department of Telfort organized ‘2019 Commercial Poster Design Competition’ this month. The competition required posters to be designed in English and had different poster themes for students of different grades. The theme for the first-year students was ‘Overseas Travel Advertising Poster’ and that for the second-year students was ‘The Role of Social Media in Business’. The competition lasted for 20 days.

The competition was divided into two stages. Firstly, Student Affairs Department announced the competition begin and accepted registration for all students of the college from June 1st. Secondly is the stage of submission of works and giving awards. As both the students of International Business Program and Digital Arts could take part in the competition, it was a great opportunity for students from different majors to communicate and learn from each other.

To ensure that the students’ work meets the requirements, Student Affairs Department commissioned a number of senior teachers from the English Teaching and Research Group and the Digital Arts Teaching and Research Group to provide one-on-one professional guidance for the competitors. Obviously the final works submitted by students illustrated their good English application ability, rich creative thinking, excellent painting ability and expressive ability.

According to the rules, students could design posters by individual or by 2-5 students as a group. In the final review stage, the poster design team (or single person) was required to explain the poster’s creativity and design ideas in English to the judges. In other words, the competition not only tested the contestant’s poster design ability, but also requested in many aspects such as teamwork, leadership, communication skills, and representative skills. The jury consisted of the provost Michael Howbrook and four senior foreign instructors. The on-site poster display of the participants were scored in terms of originality, importance, expressiveness, visual effects and language use. In this competition, a total of 25 poster design works were received, involving 97 participating students and 6 award-winning works. Each of the first, second and third prizes is awarded one each in the first-year and second-year grades. The winners are:
