The university program covers more than 400 disciplines and is one of the largest universities in the UK. Its predecessor was the Rutherford College of Engineering. In 1969, it merged with the local business and technology college and the famous domestic art and design school to become the Newcastle Polytechnic. In 1992, it was promoted to university.
